Will these updates contain a set amount of chapters?

9ave said...

I'm aiming for at least half a chapter a week, but since I'm a slow translator and I've also got school, they might not be as long as I would like them to be. Whatever the case, I'll be uploading however much I progress on each Sunday. Just thought it'd be better to give people a day they can expect updates, just so they're not waiting aimlessly :)

Thank you for translating this! It's really rare to see a translation of this caliber (and especially for not straying far from the author's intent) for a language that's so dissimilar to English. Really, really great job so far.

Thanks for all the hard work that you put into translating No.6. :) Best of luck on your finals!

Thank you!! =) if you don't mind me asking, do you translate from japanese or mandarin?

thank you for the translations, your hard work is appreciated!

Thank you for the translations. Now I can go and read No.6 without stressed me out. Yes, I'm talking about that other person who translates No.6 who is a total hate machine who also loves to insult her own readers and even the characters of the novel.

I'm so happy I found this, please keep with the hard work! Thank you very much again.

Stalking this blog like no tomorrow. xD I've been reading your translations and they're really easy to understand. Anyway, keep up the great work! I look forward to your translations!

BTW, will you being translating all of the novels? Because if you are, I'm gonna love you so much. xD

@Anonymous
Haro lost interest in this and moved on to something else. The shippers were also not making her life easier. Something I hope 9ave never has to encounter in the time ahead.

Thank you 9ave for helping us non-Japanese readers out ^^!

Dey said...

@AnonymousI fully agree about the stress part. Though I do feel sorry for fans not making Haru's life easier, she certainly didn't have to be so incredibly harsh.

Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion, Haru included. Somehow with Asano (supposedly, according to an interview) being bisexual, I think the usage of certain words wouldn't exactly make said author happy. Said used words and her 'know-it-all/I know I'm right' enforced opinion ended up getting a lot of people angry. For me it's mostly the former, it certainly left a bad aftertaste so to put it.

I'm all for freedom of speech, but if you post something hurtful and demeaning (that per definition could even be described as racist), you can expect a volatile reaction in return. That doesn't make it right, but Haru did state she was probably expecting negative attention to begin with.

Either way, I want to thank 9ave for an amazing translation! I'm a huge fan of the series and I find it such a shame the novels haven't been made available in English yet.

I certainly hope they'll be available soon, I already have a spot in my bookcase ;)

If they're never going to be translated I'll be certain to get the Japanese novels instead :)

Thank you so much for continuing with the translation! I prefer (semi-)British English to American English any day (I'm from a British colony, after all ^_^)

Hopefully the yaoi fangirls won't scare you off this series as well! If you find them too annoying, you should just ignore the comments and pretend those people don't exist; after all, their opinions don't change the content of the actual novel! Imo it's a shame to see people let random speculations by unknown teenagers about the 'BL-ness' in Nezumi and Shion's relationship kill off their enjoyment of the series *sigh*

Thanks for your hard work! Now that you've uploaded the chapters in PDF, would you like to have them in other formats? I read them in my Kindle, so I have them in MOBI. I can upload them to, like, Mediafire, if you want. I can also convert them to other formats (but I can't garantee if all the chapters, links and other stuff work in formats like EPUB).

9ave said...

@Anonymous (Sep 8 2:28)
That would be great! If the MOBI files aren't too big (how big are they anyway?) you can send them right to my email and I can probably just upload it to Google Docs along with the PDFs. I think it's so nice when fans look out for other fans like this :) Thanks for offering!

Anonymous said...

re: MOBIs
One volume is around 200 KB. Is it okay if I send volume 1 and 2 together to your mail? Or should I send the first one (the sooner, the better)? Should I convert them to other formats? They take less than half a minute :)

I figured maybe there are some fans out there who can't/don't like to read longer texts on screen like me and since I do it anyway, why not? :)

9ave said...

@Anonymous (Sep 13 12:57)
Sounds dandy. I was just asking about the size because of limits with file attachments, but 200KB should be no problem. You can send however many files you like, at whatever time that's good for you, haha. I'll upload them as they come :) Thanks for doing this!

I don't like to read things on-screen either, I still print out longer stuff just so I can read it on paper lol.

pdung31 said...

I just want to express my deeply gratitude to you. Your translation is so beautiful. Reading your translation, I have a belief that you must be a talented writer. I truly hope that there will be a day when I could read your fanfic for No.6, or any other kind of writing from you.

I once thought of asking you permission for re-translating No.6 into Vietnamese. But I gave up that idea because I was afraid that my shortage of time would force me to drop No.6 half way and that would be a disrespectful action toward both No.6 itself and you, its first-hand translator. Deep inside I still could not abandon my desire to be attach myself to No.6 (as a translator). Can I say this paradox of mine is Asano sensei's and your fault?

9ave said...

@pdung31
Thank you for such a thoughtful comment! When people tell me they enjoy my writing, it's what really keeps me going each week (and love for No. 6, of course!).

Please do know that you (and anyone) has permission at all times to translate my script. I don't actually have the right to demand permission anyway, since I'm translating without Asano's consent as well. Don't give up! I'm pretty sure many Vietnamese fans will be thankful for your translation :)

Manna said...

Thank you for translating No.6! :'D A friend of mine told me to watch it but I never did.
I found your translations by chance just searching around for nothing in particular and I'm addicted! I'm printing them out to bring to school to read. XD By doing that, I got a friend of mine to read it. We're both hooked on it and can hardly wait for more!

I think just reading the novel translations will make me finally watch the anime. XD I heard it was a bittersweet ending so, I might hold out for a while.

sylphaen1637 said...

Oh, you liked Tiger & Bunny? Me too! Plotless and childish as it was, it was a lot of fun, right?

I hear the No.6 anime got a lot of hate from the guys for "being too homo" or something? *Wince*
Didn't watch it myself, though ~ I felt it was a waste of time / bandwidth 'cause the novel is obviously better.

Trisha said...

Frou Frou is the duo that has Imogen Heap as the singer right? I absolutely love her music, it's so surreal and beautiful.

The anime club at my college is showing T&B this quarter, so I'm excited for that. No No.6 though, hahaha. (Although they have shown BL anime before! The guys in the club actually enjoyed it xD )

Haha, after having just listened to this song; I can totally see how it fits with No.6 and Nezumi's POV in particular. In fact, I loved it so much I decided to edit a No.6 amv with this song! I also dedicated it to you <3 because I really am loving your translations like all the other No.6 fans that have read your work, we really appreciate what your doing and look forward to your every update. Annamirka said...

the video is beautiful, i just watched it... bht, the two last lines, "i love you" "don't ever think that i don't" are from the novel or not? (i can't remember them even in the Hiriajuu's summary...)

Have a really wonderful Thanksgiving! I hope you get to enjoy a nice meal with your loved ones or at least do something fun. Here in the U.S. our Thanksgiving isn't for awhile. One thing that I love about fandoms like No.6 is how it brings people together from different countries all around the world...before we had the internet we were more confined to our own worlds =P

I remember when I read some reviews on the No.6 books one of the chief complaints I kept seeing was how repetitive Asano is when explaining things (apparently it will get even worse as we get to the later books)...but it's worth it for the wonderful parts in between xD

Thanks again.

Oh my, that song is perfect! Japanese music always seems so poetic when it's translated. This bit:

This loneliness bears down on me
It comes closer, comes closer
And haunts me in my dreams, but
Like a flower blooming in the ashes
I awake, again and again

Ahhhhh it's wonderful!! Thanks for sharing!

Anonymous said...

It's great that you are putting in some much effort in these translations :) you even pick out fonts for the notes of different characters ^^ I was thinking, could you upload a chapter list for this novel... if you know how many more chapters there are till it finishes... umm.. it's not important, it's just so I know how much more to expect :)

mintystarlight said...

Your translations are beautiful-- I really can't thank you enough for doing this. Really, keep up the good work~. <3

9ave said...

@Anonymous (Oct 15 7:13)
Ahaha, actually I have quite a bit of fun picking the fonts, imagining how their personalities would show up in their writing! :)

As for chapters - there are 9 volumes total in the series, and each volume usually has 5 chapters. I've usually put them off until I get closer to the end of the volume to put up the next, but now that I know there's demand for it, I'll be putting up future chapter titles whenever I find time inbetween. :) Thanks!

I recently came to know of your translation of the No. 6 novel.
What can I say, I am in awe at your skill at translating this novel (I know that its not easy work translating novels) and I am also very happy to be able to read the No. 6 Novels.
Thank you so much.

Annamirka said...

thanks for the summaries, i translated that in italian as soon as you put them (by the way, i reached you with translations, damn no.6, it makes me do unthinkable things, i think i'm scared of myself XD).
About the afterwords, it's not the interview from the official guidebook, right? i would like to read it (and translate, i have to translate all that concerns no.6, it's something stronger than me... ). thanks again, you're wanderful, i think you are on my gods lists, second only to Asano-sensei. XD bye

9ave said...

@Annamirka
Wow, that's some dedication! I'm sure your Italian fans love you for it :)

I don't think the afterwords are in the guidebook. It's not interview-style, it's just Asano looking back on what she went through writing that volume. Looks like a lot of people want to see them, so I will find the time to upload them as I go.

Annamirka said...

oh, thanks thanks, did i already said that i'm going to build you a statue, one day? XD

Trisha said...

I would be interested in the afterwords as well, but only if you have time (you do so much already) Judging by an interview with her that I read, Asano seems to be a thoughtful, interesting person.

I've been wanting to ask, how did you come up with the title "Nostalgia on 9th Avenue"? I love the sound of it. If it was a novel at a bookstore, I'd pick it up off the shelf ^^ Yet it doesn't seem to connect to No. 6?

Hopefully I'll have time to read the new chapter today when I get back from hiking!

9ave said...

@Trisha
The blog title is just completely random, haha. I like the word 'nostalgia' and all the things associated with it, and 9 is my favourite number, so... no deep meaning :) I didn't make it No. 6-related because I wanted to leave it open for future non-No. 6 projects if I ever wanted to do any after this series is finished.

Have fun hiking!

I'm asking something totally irrelevant here >O< but how do you make the posts collapse, with a "read more" link at the end. I really don't want huge walls of text to occupy my blog, but I can't seem to figure out how to do it. I am using the very old template by the way... It's okay if you are busy, since it's not that important ^^

@melodic thoughts
I'm not sure if this works for all templates, but if you're using the new Blogger interface, there's a way to do it in the post editor:
https://support.google.com/blogger/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=154172&topic=1708421&ctx=topic

If you edit with raw HTML like I do, you can just use the tag <!-- more --> and all the text after that will be hidden.

Is it bad I don't want No.6 novels to be licensed? Because if they are, then you are going to stop translating. Not everybody lives in USA. And, of course, not everybody can buy them in the Internet. I'm talking for other people, you know? Because even if I don't live in USA I can get them time to time if I travel there, but what about other people?

It kind of bothers me because I really love your translations. I don't mind paying for the novels, but, I don't know, I will miss your translations.

9ave said...

@Anonymous
I was so moved by your comment; thank you! (´;ω;`) And of course, having been with this series for half a year now, if it does get licensed it will be hard for me to let it go too.

Although I've thrown the link up in the best interests of those who want to get it licensed, if we're talking about how likely it is to happen, I don't think it is very likely. I think for an English publisher to pick it up, it would have to be something very big -- at least Naruto or Haruhi class. Since No. 6 is pretty niche, I have doubts they'll pick it up (which is also why I picked up the series to translate myself).

Thank you for letting me know, nonetheless. :) For the time being, I'll still be translating.

"No, I don't know anything beyond the fact that she's writing it. As far as I know, Asano has no blog or Twitter either, so... " (about the special sequel), how much is this news reliable? I mean, i heard this news come from a person's tweet, whose friend assisted to Asano's conference i-don't-know-when/where and heard this... but it's so much a far news that it's still uncertain.

9ave said...

@Annamirka
Yeah, I'm not sure how reliable it is either. I don't think the anime's official site is going to be announcing stuff about the book, and Kodansha's sites probably won't say anything until they have a release date.

Hope for the best I guess. :( I really wish Asano had a blog or something.

flow said...

Ah, I have a question for you! You are referring Inukashi as 'he'; why bis it? Is it because he use 'ore' or some similar phrases? Because it is said that originally Inukashi is 'she'... I'm just curious. Thank you so much! :3

And also, thank you for the translation until now! X3

9ave said...

@flow
Japanese pronouns have no gender, so technically there is no way of telling if he/she is a boy or a girl. I started out with "he" because the characters assume/act like he's a guy, and the narrative voice often sides with the characters.

I was thinking of changing the pronoun halfway through (around the time Shion starts to suspect), but I thought it would be too abrupt no matter where, so I decided to keep "he". I think the story leans more towards the interpretation of Inukashi being a girl, but again, the novel doesn't really say.

Thank you very much for translating these novels. I was sick yesterday, so I sat in bed and read them all afternoon. I really appreciate your talent and hard work. When my friend first showed me the anime, I instantly fell in love with the characters and the story, and I am very grateful to you for giving me the opportunity to read these wonderful books in English.

Thank you very much for translating No. 6 until now^^!I am french and thanks to you I was able to read volume 6, 7, 8 and 9 on your blog. Before I was in despair because the french publisher answered that he wouldn't edit the following of no 6. So thanks a lot ( sorry for my bad english )^^!

Hi I hope you are reading this but anyway I just wanted to ask and inform you if you gave the consent for someone to post the translated novel on fanfiction.net or if you know something about it if so please inform to the person you allowed to post there that fanfiction.net is for fanficts not for the translations of the novels if not then you got a big problem

Hi. Can you upload the mobi version of vol. 7-9 please? thanks :)

9ave said...

Hello! One of my readers made the mobi files and e-mailed them to me, so I'm not sure how to make them myself. Sorry!

9ave said...

No, I did not give consent to anyone to repost outside this blog. Do you happen to have a link to the fanfiction.net story? I've tried looking on the site myself and haven't been able to find it. Thank you!

by reunion... do you mean Shion will get to see Nezumi again? :D
Also, will you be translating No. 6 Beyond?

kikalol said...

Its fine... just when i posted this here people went there and reported the case so it was taken out which is why you could not find it. You have very loyal readers here :D soo its fine now.

Whoa!! And I had no idea this was happening. What would I do without readers like you (and everyone who reported to ff.net -- thanks if you're reading this!), haha. Thank you for letting me know. :)

It seems like I have a slightly different opinion about this chapter than other ^^. To me, it's not like Shion is being corrupted yet, this is just a natural process that will happen for ones who stay on top and hold the power to control. Being cold, forceful, manipulate, etc, all of these are parts of characteristic of a leader. Just think about the ones who are leading our lives right now, they are just the same. A specific level of control is needed to maintain the stability and progress in everything. This chapter is quite realistic and I don't find anything wrong with the act of Shion.

But once one gets power, he can be controlled by the power itself. That's why this process is terrifying and it's possible for Shion to lose himself and fail for the same mistake of No.6's previous rulers. Shion has way too much capacity of a leader than he ever imaged before (and it's not like he did think about his leadership before he becomes the head of rebuild council), so he is afraid of himself for what he is being right now and what he may become later (without Nezumi).

I know we will not have reunion scene from Asano, so I can just image it by myself :((((((((((((

awwww but I really hope that you will continue translating other japanese novels! It's very difficult to find translations and I believe that the Japanese writing is VERY good! what a shame there are not a lot of translations and/or translators willing to provide all these thoughts transformed in words to the rest of the world :(

I wish you the best and i'll come around and visit your blog whenever I can :)... hopefully you'll find another awesome novel and will translate it 8D

thank you so much for translating no.6! i can't wait to read the short story of no.6 and the new "Flowers for beautiful days". you're the best!

If you have Calibre or anything like is quite easy to make a mobi from a epub. Especially if you don't care that much about formatting and editing.

Thank you very much for your translations. I've waited for the main story complete translation to start reading, even if I already know the plot by the anime and now I've discovered that there is another volume o.o. May I ask if also the last volume ( Bayond ) is completed or if there are still other chapters? I'm a bit lost ^^. Thanks Shizuka

I've read quite a lot of Narise Konohara novels ( almost all the ones already translated in english). I like her works even if they are sometimes emotionally "stressfull" I.e. All the "Cold" serie. So I'm really looking forward for your translation!! Thanks Shizuka

Thanks for the comment! Beyond is complete now, and at this point this blog is up to date with all the extras Asano has written as well. If she writes more in the future, I will most likely translate them too. :)

Oh man I agree, her "COLD" series was painful. I did a search to see if anyone has translated Hako no naka yet and no one has seemed to... I hope some group hasn't picked it up already? Thanks for the comment, my first post for "Hako" should be coming soon :)
